ABOUT OUR COLLECTION:

Artisan, contemporary, unique, wearable art, featuring polymer clay, is the description of this particular collection of handcrafted jewelry.  And so affordable!

We call this jewelry "FUN-TO-WEAR" because that's the purpose it serves.  It doesn't serve to show the world your wealth or your interest in antiques.  It shows your interest in lifting spirits a bit with a spot of rich colors woven into an interesting design that catches the eye and piques the imagination.

This jewelry is crafted at the seashore on a narrow island off the coast of New Jersey, the home of many artists.  I say "narrow" because when I step outside my door and look east I see dune grasses waving on the beach near by, and, looking west I see sails cruising by on that six mile expanse of shimmering bay.  This is a fabulous atmosphere for creativity!

CREATING YOUR JEWELRY:

I work mostly in polymer clay, a wonderful new medium used in fine art for its versatility and the beauty it presents when its colors are combined and its surfaces textured. It isn't cheap for the artist and its conditioning takes time and work, and the results of the firing are sometimes disappointing. But it somehow is worth all the effort!

The tiny pieces of art that emerge when jewelry is created attract the eye and invite the touch. When you go into a gallery or museum that has a contemporary collection you may see sculptures or wall hangings composed of several differing but harmonizing materials.  Collages....montages.....the elements sing together like different voices in a choir or instruments in an orchestra.  Look for that harmony in these pieces!

The beautiful colors, even the gold dust and silver dust, are not painted on but are in the clay itself, often in swirled or marbleized patterns reminiscent of the ocean waves that break on the shore of my island here.

HOW TO ENJOY IT!

Imagination!  Are you one of those who looks at the clouds and sees interesting shapes? You then might see very subtle shapes in the softly blending swirls and patterns in the clay in many of these pieces. Or you might see landscapes or seascapes or the patterns found in gemstones and earth minerals such as agate, jasper, quartz, malachite or turquoise. Look for these patterns and enjoy!

The look of the clay is what is special about this jewelry. When combined with beads and nuggets of other materials....glass, wood, gemstones, bone, shell, leather.....harmonizing little collections are formed.   But....in this collection.... the clay is always the star!

 THE "HAND OF THE ARTIST"

You may notice that the pieces are not geometrically precise...not "twice measured, once cut" as carpenters say. They are often fluid....a bit "organic".... and that is good, as it is proof of an artwork lovingly created by hand, not rolled off an assembly line or pressed in a mold.  It also is proof that clay, an ornery medium, often has a mind of its own!

For many years I was a bonafide potter, working in stoneware clay....you know....the wheel, the huge kiln, the "earthy" look, etc., and, when I was learning that art, my teacher advised us to never mind what seemed to be little flaws or irregularities that often appeared mysteriously in our finished pieces. She assured us that we didn’t want our work to look machine made or as if it were pressed in a mold. She said, "That’s the hand of the artist!" and advised us to enjoy the look.  Great advice!        Look for the "hand of the artist"....and ENJOY !
